PV Solar Panel Cables
Improve your solar power arrangements with our industry-leading PV Solar Panel Cables. Our range includes robust 4mm and 6mm solar cables, available in both black and red colour options, and supplied in generous 100m rolls. These cables are designed to ensure efficient energy transmission for your solar systems.
For enhanced convenience, we also offer 6 SQ.MM Solar Cables fitted with MC4 Connectors, perfect as a solar panel extension cable. Whether you’re seeking solar panel cables or specific solar PV cables, our selection promises to deliver.
It is recommended that a qualified electrician install your solar panels to ensure certification. This is particularly important if you plan to register for a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) to sell your excess solar energy to the National Grid for a reduction in your utility bills.
Solar Cables FAQs
What cable do you use for solar panels?
Solar panels are wired in series or in parallel using a suitable cable size for the amperage of the panels.
Wiring in series maximizes voltage transfer over longer distances but if one panel is shaded or covered with leaves (for example) it will affect the output of the whole array. When wiring in parallel, you will not experience a drop in output if one panel is shaded. Still, all panels must be of the same voltage or the whole system will run at the lowest-rated panels, reducing the efficiency of the whole setup.
What are the different types of PV cables?
Cabling is typically 4 sq.mm or 6 sq.mm in copper wire. MC4 connectors are standard for wiring solar panels.
How many amps is a 4mm solar cable?
A 4mm cable is the most used cable for small and medium-sized solar installations and can be used for any system below 20 amps.
How many amps is a 6mm solar cable?
Use a 6mm cable for larger installations, i.e., any solar installation of 20 Amps or above. 6mm cabling can also offer better protection from bad weather so may also be used in extremely exposed locations.
Are solar cables different from regular cables?
No, most are multi-core, copper wire, sheathed in insulation. Use black and red to keep track of connections to positive or negative terminals on your panels, batteries, controller, and inverter.
Do you need special wiring for solar panels?
Always purchase cabling approved for solar panels in 4mm or 5mm and the correct MC4 connectors to ensure a safe and straightforward installation.
How do I know what size solar cable I need?
Always check the total amperage of your solar system and purchase 4mm or 6mm cables accordingly.
